Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge otherwise known as TPACK is a framework needed for teacher knowledge. TPACK is the result of teachers only looking at the technology and not necessarily understanding how it works. I believe this framework is excellent for educators to follow. Teachers need to be knowledgeable in what they are teaching and this framework follows that.
The article that I was assigned was The Net Generation. This article was basically about a survey about preservice teachers' use of Web 2.0 tools. They wanted to see how often or how well these preservce teachers used these tools. They also wanted to see how familiar they were with these tools available to them. I was not surprised the results that they received. Before this class I was not familiar with what a Wiki was and the survey showed that 11% of the preservice teachers were not familiar with it as well.
In all, reading these two articles definitely gave me a better understanding on TPACK. Educators definitely need to know what they are talking about when teaching. Students will benefit from the teachers' knowledge of technology. We need to keep these students up to date with the latest technology.
The framework is the foundation for teachers to know the content, know how to use technology and the pedagogy. It will help make teachers more well rounded and balanced to help the students succeed. I liked your article of what you read because it ties in with the TPACK because you need the necessary tools to help you guide your students in the right direction.
ReplyDeleteIt's important for teachers to know the content, but it is also very important for teachers to know how to teach with technology and accommodate for each of her students. This is why TPACK is important. TPACK is not just about content, or technology, or pedagogy, they must be all interrelated. As educators we must aim to teach with knowledge, know the content, with pedagogy techniques and technology all together.
ReplyDeleteBefore this class I was also unaware of wiki. Actually I think that if we were to see the percentages of education majors that did not know about wiki before taking education classes the percentage would be a lot higher than 11%. These articles were very helpful.
ReplyDeleteUnderstanding technology and how it works is very important, but how we use it is key to our success. I think understanding the framework of TPACK is essential to becoming well rounded teachers and making sure we are using technology in our classrooms. I think that being an elementary teacher, we should know how to use tools such as the smart board and the elmo etc. to benefit our students.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Teachers should be well rounded and know the content knowledge, how to teach, and how to incorporate technology into they're instruction.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your thoughts about framework. It is very similar to building a house, you have to have a solid foundation before you can take the next step. I feel that applys to many aspects of education, not just TPACK. If you don't have a solid understanding of what you are teaching, you can't really expect your students to really learn and understand what you are teaching.
ReplyDeleteI think that to add more depth to your TPACK post you could add more on what you think and how you can apply TPACK into your classroom. I also think that how you explained your article was good and helps the reader better understand what perspective you have on the topic.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your initial thought about TPACK being the result of teachers not knowing how to use technology. Although, another big factor that made TPACK more useful seems to be the lack of experience in being able to determine how a teacher would run their classroom. TPACK is a good chance to learn the specific skills needed to effectively teach kids.
ReplyDeleteNot only do we have to know about technology but we must be able to incorporate it effectively. Our world is evolving around us and we must understand that technology is becoming a separate way of learning. In order for us to be the best teachers we can be, we must strive to reach our students in whatever ways they learn best.
ReplyDeleteP.S. It's hard to read the light green text on the white background :(
I agree with the teachers having to be well rounded and have a strong foundation in all three areas. I think that teachers will be better able to facilitate the students needs because they will have a better understanding of all the components needed.
ReplyDeletePS I am color blind so it was very hard to read the green font.
Wikis, for example, are viewed ideal for fostering joined-knowledge construction and expression of diverse opinions through collaborative authorship, and blogs are considered participatory platform for conversations and self-expression. Such tools can also be portals for teachers where they can access various teaching resources, collaborate with other teachers, and share their practices virtually.
ReplyDeleteRegarding structural issues, students and teachers may be constrained by their lack of technology skills, limited technology access, and the emerging nature of technology in school settings. Although students are viewed digital natives, not all of them may be digitally enhanced, needing further assistance and technical support when they use technologies.
That's the major reason that education majors take a technology-integration class, such as technology and design, which “talks about how technology can support teaching and learning inside the classroom.
I agree with your statement that the students benefit greatly from a teacher's knowledge of technology, as well as the teacher's content knowledge and ability to deliver it in an understandable and engaging manner. I was also very unfamiliar with much of the technology used in classrooms today, and hope to continue to learn more so that I will be proficient with technology in the classroom.
